Way of the Jinbei: The Coolest Japanese Pyjamas

If you’ve ever admired the effortless cool of Japanese summer style, chances are you’ve come across the jinbei (甚平).  Alternately Jinbē (甚兵衛) or Hippari (ひっぱり), this traditional two-piece set comprising a side-tied short-sleeved top and matching shorts is the go-to loungewear for warm weather in Japan. What Is a ‘Jinbei’? Originally worn by men and boys during the hot summer months, the jinbei has evolved into a unisex staple. Made from breathable fabrics like cotton or hemp, it’s designed for maximum comfort and ventilation. The top features a kimono-style wrap with inner and outer ties, while the shorts are loose-fitting, making the ensemble perfect for relaxing at home or stepping out for a casual errand. From Festivals to Bedtime Jinbei are often worn at summer festivals and celebrations like Tanabata, which celebrates the meeting of deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (and is considered an auspicious day for finding love!). They are comfortable for both indoor and outdoor casual wear as a lighter alternative to the yukata. Today, they’re just as likely to be found in bedrooms as stylish sleepwear. Modern designs have expanded to include vibrant colours and playful patterns. Why We Love Them Jinbei strike the perfect balance between tradition

The Long and Short of It (Literally) Happi are a shorter, calf length Kimono – similar to a western dressing gown. Yukata are a longer ankle length variation, more closely related to traditional Kimono (yet still dressing gown-esque). So What is a Kimono? The use of the word ‘Kimono’ is twofold. Traditionally, Kimono refers to a formal garment with strict expectations, usually lined, worn with layers and embelishements. Before the 20th century, few types of Kimono existed and therefore material, decoration and Obi Belts would differentiate social status, age and gender.  In modern times, many types of Kimono exist with different cuts and shapes. Post war, these styles of Kimono started to depict social standing, rather than the traditional Kimono and it’s embellishments. With the advent of these subcategories, ‘Kimono’ has come to be a general descriptor for gowns that
